Wayne Hungate has backed the Homedale Lions Club Demolition Derby through his Owyhee County Farm Bureau Insurance agency for nearly five years.
This year, he’s back to sponsor the main event, but Hungate for the first time is also throwing his support behind rookie driver Brady Trout.
Hungate is teaming with Rod Fivecoat Auctions and Wilson Point S Tire and Service in Wilder to sponsor the rookie driver, who recently graduated from Homedale High School.
“I count it as a real source of pride to be a part of a rural community,” the 27-year Farm Bureau agent said. “I go to state meetings, and they have me talk about the great relationships we form in towns like Homedale.”
Hungate has been entrenched in the Homedale community for years, and that creates a family-like bond with his clients.
“I like being a part of the community because then they’re family,” Hungate said of his clients.
“When the call comes that they’ve been in a wreck or there has been a fire, me and my team spring into action.”
Hungate’s family has been in the community for years, too. His two youngest sons, Cole and Chad, graduated from Homedale High School.
Along with older brother Drake, the Hungate boys have been instrumental in providing auction items for the Marsing Disaster Auction.
Wayne’s agency has helped HHS athletics with the Trojan Toss at football games.
But the Fourth of July Demolition Derby is where Hungate made his largest early impact.
And he’s glad that the relationship is continuing even in a tough year.
“I’m glad to be part of the derby and to be patriotic with everything that’s going on,” Hungate said.
“I told (Lions Club president Will Pryor) that I was proud to help keep it going.”
It’s about more than seeing cars crunch on the nation’s birthday, too, though.
“I’m proud to be part of this community and to be able to give to the community,” Hungate said.
